A Medieval Country House In Cheshire Sells For 3m

Chorley Old Hall is a Grade I listed building that has its origins in the medieval times. The unique property is being retailed at a whopping 3 million, but estate agents and historians alike will argue that it’s well worth it.

Alderley Edge is famous for its well-kept mansions and footballer residents. The Hall nestles on the outskirts of the village, surrounded by its immaculate grounds and period water gardens. It’s hard to imagine that all this is just a stone’s throw from Manchester airport and the main commuter routes to London.

The Hall is steeped in history and not a lot has changed since it was built in 1330 by Robert de Chorley. Chorley’s family were horse breeders who supplied Edward III and the Black Prince with chargers during the Hundred Years War against France. It holds the great honour of being the oldest inhabited country house in Cheshire, and perhaps the country.

Although the property has a Grade I listed status, it has been fully modernised and contains lavish bathrooms and a large family kitchen. But the main focus is the Great Hall, which was the first area of the house to be built. It still has four medieval stone arches and a studded oak front door.

The house has been updated over the years and so has additions from the Tudor, Stuart and Victorian eras. The Davenport family made the biggest alteration to the property back in 1523, when open fires were going out of fashion, so they built a fireplace and upper chamber in the Great Hall. A self-contained wing was also added by the same family which extends the property and provides an excellent example of Tudor black and white timbering.

Chorley Old Hall beautifully combines the medieval with the modern. Such a brilliant property does not come on the market often so the 4 bedroomed house is expected to sell for a well-deserved 3 million.
